Will homeowners insurance pay for a new roof after hail?
It depends on your policy and on what your insurance company finds. Nobody outside your insurance company, including a roofer or a website like this one, can tell you in advance whether a repair or replacement will be covered.
Who decides
Your insurance company decides what your policy covers. If you contact them about storm damage, they usually send an adjuster to inspect the roof and then make a decision based on your policy terms and what the adjuster documents.
What usually matters
- Whether there is physical damage, and whether it was caused by an event your policy covers.
- Your policy’s terms. Policies differ: some cover roofs at replacement cost, some at actual cash value, and some limit or exclude certain roof damage. Your declarations page and policy documents spell this out.
- Timing. Many policies set a time limit for reporting damage after a storm. Check your policy or ask your agent.
- The roof’s condition before the storm. Wear from age is generally treated differently from sudden storm damage.
What a roofer can and can’t do
A roofer can inspect your roof, document what they see, and give you an estimate for repairs. In Texas and Colorado, a roofing contractor may not act as a public adjuster or negotiate an insurance claim on your behalf. Questions about your claim or your policy belong with your insurance company, your agent, or a licensed public adjuster.

A good first step
Before you contact anyone, it can help to know whether a storm actually brought large hail near your home, and when. You can check the storm history for your address on our homepage, and you can ask a local roofer for a no-cost inspection to find out whether there is any damage at all.
Check the storm history at your address
See radar-estimated hail size, dates, and spotter reports near your home, then get a no-cost roof inspection from a local roofer.
